What is Periodontal (Gum) Disease?

Periodontology is the dental specialty that cares for and treats patients with gum disease.

Gingivitis   is the earliest sign of gum disease; which manifests itself as bleeding gums, often on brushing and flossing and if severe, even spontaneously.

Early warning signs of Gum Disease include:

  • Bleeding gums

that usually on brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad taste and/or bad breath
  • Receding gums

  • Gums that have separated from the teeth
  • Gaps appearing between the teeth
  • Teeth that are loose or are changing position

Periodontitis   or what is more commonly called gum disease, is caused by bacteria in the mouth. It affects not only the gums; but the ligament and bone that hold a tooth in place. If it progresses untreated, it can lead to loss of all the supporting structures of the tooth and ultimately tooth loss.

The supporting structures of the tooth which are the bone, gums and ligaments are known as the periodontium; from which periodontal disease gets its name.
